You'll need to get the translation patch to play it in English (the original game is in Japanese). I kept thinking that I was close to the end, but I wasn't anywhere near it! In addition, I was never overly-frustrated at any point. The story is engaging and interesting, and there are a few different endings and secrets (I'm currently playing it through for the second time, and I will no doubt play it again after that). The game is obviously very well designed, and I have yet to experience any buggy gameplay, which is quite an achievement for a freeware game. The characters are in an "anime" style, which is also a bit retro, though it still is graphically original with its pseudo-chibi style. The graphics are "retro" for lack of a better word (think NES), but they are still great, so you don't have to worry about going Oedipus Rex status.
Sounds simple right? Well, it is in a way. You control a nameless little dude who kills the bad guys with various guns, while rescuing the "Mimigas", the inhabitants of the floating island where the story is set. An amnesiac robot with no name wakes up on a floating island and is greeted by the Mimigas, a rabbit-like race who are now declining under the rule of a maniacal scientist. I know that everyone probably knows about this one already, but for those who haven't experienced the greatness that is Cave Story, they must learn.
